Comment about our Sleigh Beds

Not only do I love selling our sleigh bed, I love how it looks in my bedroom. The eye is drawn to its graceful curves making it the focal point of my bedroom set.

But I also love the quality of our traditional sleigh beds. I'm always visiting furniture stores so I see lots of sleigh beds. I can say with assurance that our handcrafted sleigh beds are made to last. To illustrate how sturdy they are, I'll ask people to go ahead, try to lift the leg—if you can. Furthermore, our sleigh beds don't wobble. We don't skimp by not curving the center panels—the legs as well as the center panels are curved. And I can tell people to stand on our sleigh bed side rails without fear they'll break. If there's a choice, why not buy a quality, made-in-America heirloom, that will last a lifetime?

I've had my oak sleigh bed in my home for 9 years now. It's just as beautiful, and just as sturdy today, as the day I brought it home.

Classic Sleigh Beds

Classic furniture styles are deemed “classics” because they are in keeping with a traditional style that was popular during another era. Modern manufacturing practices may skew the design so that is in keeping with more contemporary craftsmanship, but the fundamentals of the design itself call upon the lines and materials inherent in the original conception. The classic sleigh bed, for instance, has had a resurgence in popularity over the past decade, but its origin rests in early 1800s French and American design — a part of design know as the Empire Period that was inspired from ancient Roman and Grecian empires. The French design was far smaller than the American version, designed to accommodate one person rather than two, but both countries saw great enthusiasm for the sleigh bed during this time period.

The sleigh bed, true to its name, is known by its curved headboard and footboard and its use of heavier woods — a design that resembles an old-fashioned sleigh. The more contemporary versions of the traditional sleigh bed, while still represented by the curved headboard, may not necessarily have a footboard; and the curvature may be displayed in varying degrees. But no matter what the differences in one design to the next, the sleigh bed has an elegant and regal connotation, making it a favorite in bedroom suites worldwide.

At Furniture Traditions, the sleigh bed is one of our most popular pieces as well. Our customers love the selection of alder and oak sleigh beds, whether they choose just the bed itself or a bedroom suite that includes a variety of pieces that complement the bed, from nightstands and armoires to media consoles and chests.
